We are docked today in the port of Civitavecchia (Rome’s port) around an hours drive from Rome.
It would appear we were fortunate, in as much as Romans typically holiday in August, this combined with a weekend and a Saint’s day contrived to make Rome relatively traffic free.
We started our day in st Peter’s Square and visited St Peter’s Basilica - it would not be an exaggeration to say the building interior dwarf’s even the biggest railway terminus I have ever visited. I guess as corporate HQ it is only fitting and that the statues, icons and paintings should all be exceptional too. The square outside, as seen on TV, can hold some quarter of a million people!
We then took an open topped tour bus (and enjoyed the Roman rain) the trip was amazing, history at every corner and up every alley.
Trevi Fountain (and dozens of others), The Colosseum and The Forum, The Pantheon.
Again I hope the will give some flavour of the City of Rome.
